Dog Boarding Guide:

The holiday season is exciting—but if you’re a dog owner, it also comes with one big question: what will you do with your pup while you’re away?

Dog boarding is a safe and popular solution, but preparing your dog ahead of time is essential to ensure a smooth, stress-free experience for both of you.

Whether this is your dog’s first stay or they’re a seasoned guest, here’s how to get them ready for holiday pet boarding.

           1. Don’t Wait—Book Early

Holiday travel is one of the busiest times for dog boarding facilities. Many reputable locations fill up weeks (or even months) in advance, so planning ahead is critical.

Booking early not only secures your spot but also gives you time to properly prepare your dog for their stay.

           2. Schedule a Trial Stay

If your dog has never been boarded before, consider scheduling a short trial stay before your trip.

This “practice run” helps your dog:

             Get familiar with the environment

Meet the staff and other dogs

             Adjust to a new routine

Even a day or overnight visit can significantly reduce anxiety during a longer holiday stay.

           3. Make Sure Vaccinations Are Up to Date

Most dog boarding facilities require proof of vaccinations.

           These may include:

             Rabies

             Bordetella (kennel cough)

             Core vaccines like DAPP

These requirements help prevent the spread of illness in shared environments where dogs interact closely.

It’s also a good idea to schedule a quick vet check before boarding—especially for older dogs or those with health conditions.

           4. Stick to a Routine

Dogs thrive on consistency. The more you can maintain their normal routine, the better they’ll adjust to boarding.

           Before your trip:

Keep feeding and walking schedules consistent

             Practice short periods of separation

Introduce crate time if they’re not already used to it

Maintaining familiar habits can help your dog feel secure even in a new environment.

           5. Pack the Essentials (& Skip the Extras)

Preparing a “boarding bag” ensures your dog has everything they need. Most facilities recommend packing:

           Bring:

Your dog’s regular food (plus extra)

             Medications with clear instructions

             Emergency contact information

             Feeding and care instructions

           Leave at home (unless approved):

             Valuable toys

             Loose bedding

Items that could be chewed or swallowed

Keeping your dog on their normal diet is especially important to avoid digestive issues during their stay.

           6. Help Ease Separation Anxiety

It’s normal for dogs to feel a little uneasy when away from home.

You can help by building independence ahead of time:

             Practice calm departures and arrivals

Avoid making a big fuss when leaving

Encourage your dog to relax on their own

A well-exercised, mentally stimulated dog is also more likely to settle in quickly at a boarding facility.

           7. Choose the Right Boarding Facility

Not all dog boarding options are the same. Take time to research and visit facilities before making a decision.

           Look for:

Make This Time of Year Special

The holiday season is fast approaching! This time of year is all about joy, warmth, and togetherness, so it’s the perfect time to include your furry family members in the fun! Celebrating the holidays with your dog can make the festivities even more special. Let’s explore some fun and safe ways to include your canine companion in the holiday cheer!

           Dog-Friendly Holiday Treats

While traditional holiday treats that include ingredients such as chocolate and raisins are toxic to dogs, you can still spoil your pup with some dog-friendly goodies. Consider making homemade treats using healthy, filling ingredients like pumpkin, sweet potato, and peanut butter. You can also find a variety of festive dog treats at pet stores or online. While you should make sure that you dispense treats in moderation and store them safely, having something special for your pup can help include them in the festivities.

           Festive Walks and Outings

Take advantage of the crisp winter air and go for festive walks with your dog. Does your neighborhood have festive holiday light displays? Check them out with your dog! You should also take a look at your local area calendar for dog-friendly holiday events. Many communities host dog-friendly markets, parades, and even Santa Paws photo opportunities. These events are a great way to socialize your dog and create lasting holiday memories. Remember to be mindful of your dog’s comfort; if your furry friend doesn’t like crowds, unfamiliar situations, or other dogs, it might be better to keep your festive wanderings more low-key. Check the weather and schedule your outdoor adventures around any cold snaps.

           Holiday Photo Shoot

Capture the holiday spirit with a festive photo shoot. Dress your dog in a cute holiday-themed outfit or bandana and snap some adorable pictures. You could even create personalized holiday cards featuring your furry friend to send to family and friends!

           Dog-Friendly Holiday Parties

If you're hosting a holiday gathering, consider making it dog-friendly. Invite your friends and family to bring their well-behaved dogs along for the celebration. Make sure to have plenty of water bowls and dog treats on hand, and have a quiet space available so that dogs have somewhere to go if they need a break from playtime.

           Dog Toys

Many pet stores feature themed toys around the holidays. Select a few new toys for your best friend to open during the gift-giving season; this helps keep them occupied during family time and helps include them in the festivities. If you have young kids, let them help choose new toys for the dog to help encourage their sense of generosity.

           Holiday Movie Night

Plan a cozy holiday movie night with your dog. Choose a festive film, make some popcorn (just for you, as popcorn can be harmful to dogs), and snuggle up on the couch together. This is a perfect way to relax and enjoy the holiday season. Your dog will love all the extra cuddles!

Schedule a Special Dog Grooming Session

Help your pup look and feel their best leading up to the holiday season by scheduling a grooming session! A bath, fresh haircut, and nail trim can help your dog look great in photos and at any holiday parties they might attend.

           Consider Your Dog Boarding Needs

If you have holiday plans that cannot include your dog, whether they include travel or human-specific parties, consider what you will do with your dog during those times that you cannot be at home. The holiday season can be hectic, but it’s important to maintain your pet’s schedule. An experienced dog boarding or daycare facility can be a lifesaver during the busy holiday season. You’ll be able to trust that your dog is in a safe, caring environment and your best friend will be kept engaged until you are able to collect them.

           Holiday Safety Tips

While celebrating the holidays with your beloved pet, it's important to keep safety in mind. Avoid decorations that could be harmful if ingested by your dog, such as tinsel, ribbons, and glass ornaments. Keep holiday plants like poinsettias and mistletoe out of reach, as they can be toxic to dogs. Make sure that you, your family, and any holiday guests avoid feeding your dog any table scraps; many of these foods can contain ingredients that could make your dog sick. Also, be cautious with candles and open flames to prevent accidents.

           Have a Happy Holiday Season!

Including your dog in the holiday festivities can make the season even more special. No matter what activities you choose, there are plenty of ways to celebrate with your furry friend. Just remember to prioritize your dog’s safety and comfort, and you'll create wonderful memories together that will last a lifetime. A plunge pool is a small pool meant for cooling off and lounging. They are significantly smaller than a traditional pool and can even double as a hot tub in the winter months. This allows people to enjoy the benefits of a swimming pool in the summer and a hot tub in the winter even with limited space.

Bringing in a dog to your family is a great way to improve your life, as animals and pets are known to increase our overall happiness. These pets play a large role in our lives, however, they are a large responsibility and rely on us as their owners to keep them healthy and happy. Similarly to humans, dogs are pets that require a routine grooming regimen in order to make sure they stay clean and healthy. At America's Country Store and Pet Resort, we not only are proud to provide the products, food, and other supplies to take care of your pets at home, but we also have professionals to provide premier dog grooming throughout College Station, TX, and Bryan, TX.

Depending on the breed of your dog, different grooming practices are often recommended. For short-haired breeds, you may be able to provide light grooming periodically at home and schedule professional grooming less frequently compared to longer-haired breeds. Long-haired breeds are better taken care of by professional groomers with experience, as matting is more common. All breeds however require their nails to be trimmed back, and thorough bathing every couple of weeks, which are best to be performed by a groomer.

Some other benefits of bringing your pet to professional dog grooming services include:

Flea Treatments & Prevention: While we hope that you and your pet never have to worry about fleas, unfortunately, it isn't uncommon to occur. Not only do fleas make your pet extremely uncomfortable, but they can also jump off into your residential property. By having regular dog grooming services, our staff can use products to better prevent fleas from attaching to your dog, and we can catch any lingering fleas early and remove them.

Early Detection of Skin, Teeth, & Ear Infections: If you are not trained in pet grooming, signs of infection may be easily overlooked during at-home grooming and brushing. By scheduling regular dog grooming, our team will thoroughly check your pet for any signs of infection.

Positive Behavior Practice: Bringing your pet for regular dog grooming is a great way to socialize your dog, and get them used to being in new and unfamiliar spaces from a young age. Our staff is extremely patient with all breeds and understands that the first few times your pet visits us it can be a little overwhelming. Over time we have noticed that each pet that visits us becomes more comfortable in their surroundings, which can translate to better behavior in other unfamiliar settings as well.

Do Our Dogs Dream?

Have you ever wondered what your dog is thinking about as they are asleep on their beds, twitching their noses, snoring, or moving their feet? Are they dreaming about their day? Maybe they are thinking about digging bones out back or chasing the squirrel?

Have you ever wondered what your dog is thinking about as they are asleep on their beds, twitching their noses, snoring, or moving their feet? Are they dreaming about their day? Maybe they are thinking about digging bones out back or chasing the squirrel?

As long as your dog is sleeping, you can assume they are dreaming. We all know that sleep is an important activity as it gives the body time to recharge. During this activity, the brain is also processing certain information and experiences that happened while awake.

It can only be assumed that dogs have dreams as they go through several sleep cycles just like humans. Scientists can use specialized equipment to determine brain activity and track these sleep cycles which include wakefulness, Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep, and non-rapid-eye-movement sleep. REM sleep is where it is believed that the most memorable and vivid dreams occur.

Unlike humans, dogs can't awaken and describe their dreams to someone which is why we have relied on scientists to gather important data about dog dreams through various observations. They have found that as dogs fall asleep, their breathing becomes deeper and more regular. Dreams usually begin after about 20 minutes when the dog has reached REM sleep. Their breathing will then become shallow and more irregular. This is when you may see them twitch or appear as if they are chasing squirrels in the backyard. Their eyes move as their eyelids are closed, often darting like they are looking for something.

According to the American Kennel Club, some dogs dream more than others. This may depend on the age and size of the dog. Small dogs often have more frequent dreams that are shorter in duration compared to larger dogs who have fewer dreams, longer in duration. Puppies may dream more than older dogs as they are processing a lot of new information obtained throughout the day.

As we approach the spring and summer months, we will all begin spending more time outdoors. It may be going for a swim, a hike, walking the dog, or simply soaking in the sun on your patio. Spending time in your yard is one of the easiest and most popular ways to enjoy the nice weather. That causes millions of people to update their outdoor décor every year. They not only want to enjoy their yards themselves, but they want to be proud to show anyone their yard.

A gnome is something that many of us remember our grandparents and other family members having in their yards and gardens. This has led many people to have a nostalgic attachment to them and they have become affiliated with nature. There are endless looks to choose from and they are a popular décor item from the yard.

After several years of quarantining because of COVID-19, backyard playsets have seen a sharp increase in popularity. Children have boundless energy and being couped up in the house, for children especially, is not a good thing. They want to go outside and play. A backyard playset is a way to keep kids entertained while also keeping them safe.

America’s Country Store and Pet Resort is here to help dispel the myth about dog boarding. Your dog will not be locked in a kennel all day and night. Rather, it will be a great opportunity for them to make new doggy friends and get all the attention they need and deserve!

However, that does not mean you can just suddenly bring your dog for boarding and expect things to go well. But don’t worry; there are some simple things you can do to help with the adjustment.

The first is familiarity. Just as you’d send your child to summer camp with a few of their favorite things, it’s a good idea to send your dog to dog boarding with a favorite chew toy, sleeping blanket, or brand of dog food to help them feel more at home. Another good idea is to sign your dog up for

Dogs pick up on our emotions quickly. Therefore, try not to show anxiety during the day of the start of boarding or on the way there. If you stay calm, your dog will more than likely do so as well. Try to get your dog some exercise just before the trip, as it will help to tire them out. However, avoid feeding the dog too much, which can cause stomach issues. Finally, when saying goodbye, make it quick and positive; cry in the car afterward if you have to!

Of course, please have your dog’s vaccinations up to date. It’s also best to make sure your dog is ok being around other dogs. If you’d like to learn more about our dog boarding services, get in touch with America’s Country Store and Pet Resort today!

Ensuring that your animals are eating food that is beneficial to them can help them to live longer and healthier lives. Knowing where you are purchasing feed from is crucial. Trying to find a cheap option may be your first thought when buying animal feed, but it is not always the best option. The feed you give your animals should be filled with the nutrients they need. Some food groups that play an important role in an animal's health and well-being include:

Vitamins are micronutrients that help improve the animal’s resistance to disease and works as a cofactor for enzymes.

Proteins are an essential component for many diets. Protein is a macronutrient that contains nitrogen and equips the rumen microorganisms to help digest food.

Carbohydrates provide the main source of energy for animals.

Water is the most critical component in feed and ensures normal biochemical and physiological conditions.

Minerals aid with the proper growth and reproduction of the animal.

Fats contain a much higher yield of calories per unit in comparison to carbohydrates and are also a rich source of energy.

Does your back hurt after leaning over the bathtub washing your dog? Does it take hours, or days, to finish trimming your dog's hair? Although you might like to save money, it might be a better idea to have your dog professionally groomed. Doing so will help save you time and energy while making your furry friend look and feel great.

After bringing your dog home and getting it acclimated to the family and surroundings, it's time to think about dog grooming. It is normally not recommended to start grooming services before 12 weeks of age. The first grooming appointment usually gets the dog introduced to all of the services including getting a bath, blow-drying, nail clipping, and a puppy trim. The first visit does not take very long as the puppy may have a short attention span.

What's Normally Included with Dog Grooming Services?

A professional dog grooming service first consists of the dog being brushed. During this step, the groomer will get out any mats in the fur, making it easier to lather the shampoo during washing. The groomer will then lather the dog with shampoo, giving the dog a nice scrub. They will clean the dog's ear, removing any buildup. During this step, the groomer will be able to determine if there are any signs of infection and will relay this information when you come to pick up the dog.

The dog will be dried either by air-drying or blow-drying and then trimming will begin all over, including above the dog's eyes, tips of the ears, and bottom of the feet. Their nails will be trimmed to a comfortable length. In some cases, groomers may brush your dog's teeth and provide anal gland expression services.
The time it takes to complete dog grooming services depends on the size of the dog, the breed, and the services being completed. Small services like nail trims should only take about 10-15 minutes. Full grooming, bath to trimming, may take 3-4 hours. How often a grooming session is recommended depends on the breed, the type of coat, and the length of the dog's hair. Typically, it is recommended to have your dog groomed every 4-6 weeks to avoid getting matted and to keep the dog clean and healthy. However, some dogs can go longer between grooming sessions.

           Choosing A Groomer

Finding the right dog groomer for your dog may be as difficult as finding the right hairdresser for yourself. Since they will be with the groomer for a couple of hours, you'll want to find someone you can trust. One of the best ways to find a groomer is to ask for recommendations. Your family and friends can probably provide the names of the groomers they use which can help narrow down your search. Once you have some names, check out reviews online.

The next step is asking questions of the groomer you choose. This may include asking about their experience, training, certifications, what breeds they have experience with, their prices, hours, and more. You can visit their grooming salon ahead of time to check out the place and ask more questions. A reputable groomer will welcome you to take a tour. Ask about the grooming fees as this may be different for every breed.

Many dog owners will simply use doggy daycare as a solution to have care for their dog while they are at work. However, the benefits of doggy daycare are more than just dog sitting. Doggy day care can give your dog the attention they need while you are away, while also socializing with other dogs! Even if you are not planning on traveling, enrolling your dog to our dog daycare can help with training for puppies, and make your pet feel more comfortable in new settings or around other animals. You don't need to have a packed schedule to inquire about our dog boarding or dog daycare options, as many owners in the Bryan, TX and College Station, TX areas utilize our services solely to help train their dogs. Below are 5 reasons why you should consider sending your dog to doggy daycare.

           1.	Socialization

Doggy daycare can help train your dog on how to properly interact and socialize with other dogs. This can help your dog remain calm in future situations of meeting and interacting with new dogs.

           2.	Exercise

It is extremely important to your dog’s overall health they get enough exercise and playtime. Not only will playtime make your dog happier, but it can also prevent your dog from becoming overweight and other health issues. Dog daycare will also help your dog release energy, so your dog is more calm and relaxed after a long day at work.

           3.	Routine

Taking your dog to doggy daycare often will provide your dog with a routine of playtime, walks, and bathroom time they can get comfortable with. Like many other animals, dogs thrive off routine and are creatures of habit. Dog daycare provides an organized schedule of activities for your dog.

           4.	Reduces Separation Anxiety

Many dogs suffer from separation anxiety when their owners are out of the house. Sometimes separation anxiety can cause dogs to use the bathroom in the house, engage in destructive behavior, or bark excessively. Sending your dog to doggy daycare will allow your dog to get social with other dogs and the staff to prevent loneliness.

           5.	Safety

Leaving your dog home alone can be nerve-wracking, especially if you have a new puppy. You don’t want your dog to get into a dangerous situation and get hurt while you are away. You also don’t want to leave your dog crated all day while you are at work. Doggy daycare provides constant supervision of your dog throughout the day to prevent any issues or injuries.

If you have a busy schedule and find yourself struggling to find the time to give your dog the attention they deserve, it may be time to consider doggy daycare. If you are a dog owner in College Station or Bryan, TX, count on America’s Country Store and Pet Resort for dog daycare services. Adopting your first dog can be both a stressful and exciting time. You are welcoming a new member into your family, but you may be lost on your first steps to prepare for this new member. America’s Country Store and Pet Resort is here to give first-time dog owners tips on training and caring for your new furry friend.

           Food & Supplies

The first thing you need to do to prepare for your new pet is to get supplies. Make sure you buy plenty of toys, a dog bed, leash, collar, and bowls for food. Different breeds and ages of dogs have different nutritional requirements. Before bringing your furry friend home, be sure to consult with a veterinarian or staff where you adopted your dog about your dog’s dietary needs and restrictions. Once you decide on a brand of food that’s best for your pup, stock up before bringing your new dog home!

           Prepare Your Home

Unless you are adopting an older dog who had a previous owner, your new dog will most likely not be housetrained. You need to prepare your home for accidents. Avoid letting your dog have free reign of the whole house right away. Try to create a gated space or separate room for your dog. This avoids overwhelming your new dog and allows them to adjust to their new surroundings. In this space, it may be a good idea to layout potty pads in case your dog has an accident. Remove any valuables or items that may be damaged from your dog chewing on them.

           Start Training

Proper training is essential for all dogs. It is important to discourage unwanted behaviors by offering alternative options. For example, if your dog is chewing your shoe, take away the shoe and put a toy in their mouth instead. If your dog used the bathroom inside, take your dog outside to show them that’s where they should be going. You should also reward good behavior with praise and treats. It is also important to train your dog to be comfortable in their crate, so when you can’t supervise your dog, you can put them in their crate and avoid any accidents. It also can be beneficial to take your dog to dog daycare or classes if you work during the day, want help with training, or want to get your dog comfortable being around other dogs.

           Develop a Routine

Coming up with a daily routine can help your dog adjust to their new household. It is important to feed your dog, take your dog on walks or outside, and crate your dog around the same time every day. This helps your dog get settled and aids in potty and crate training.

Remember to be patient with your new pup! They are adjusting to being in a new environment just like you’re adjusting to having a new pet. Give your dog time to settle in and adjust. When it comes to setting your new dog up for success, America’s Country Store and Pet Resort has you covered.
